Romo hoping to qualify for US Open

David Skinns is in illustrious company as thousands of golfers aim to qualify for the US Open.

Most famous among the large field of hopefuls is Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.

He shot a two-under 69 last Thursday at a qualifying event — predictably enough, in Dallas — to book his place in sectional qualifying, the last hurdle before taking his place in the full US Open.

Skinns and Romo will compete at the same event in The Woodlands, Houston, with a significant amount of media attention focused on the 30-year-old Cowboys star.

Following the victory, Romo was pleased with his efforts.

"It was good," he said. "It was a tough putt (to qualify) but that's nice when you can have it when it counts.

"It's nice to finish when you need to. It's exciting and it's self-gratifying."

Other major US sports stars attempting, but failing, to qualify for this year's US Open include fellow American footballers Josh Scobee, of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Ryan Longwell, of the Minnesota Vikings. Former baseball star John Smoltz also failed to qualify.
